How to Start Modeling with No Experience: Expert Tips from HCC Founder Mel Tjeong
Dreaming of becoming a model but don’t know where to start? You’re not alone! Breaking into the modeling industry can seem daunting, but with the right steps and mindset, you can set yourself up for success.
Meet Melanie Tjeong,
Portrait photographer and founder of The Honolulu City Club (HCC), has worked with countless models and has seen firsthand what it takes to get noticed. Her work has been featured in publications worldwide, both in digital and print. Here are her expert tips for aspiring models looking to launch their careers with no prior experience.
1. Take Your First Digitals
One of the first things any aspiring model should do is take digitals—simple, unedited photos that showcase your natural look.
“Google what digitals look like and get someone to take your photos, just on your phone is fine against a white wall,” Mel advises. These images should include a mix of full-body, close-up, and profile shots, all in natural lighting with minimal makeup. Keep your outfit simple—think jeans and a fitted top or a swimsuit for body shots.
2. Submit to Agencies
Once you have your digitals, it’s time to start reaching out to modeling agencies. “You can cold email or call agencies and send your digitals,” Mel suggests. Many agencies have an online submission process, so check their websites for guidelines and requirements. Be sure to include your name, age, height, measurements, and contact information along with your digitals.
HCC welcomes new faces and is always on the lookout for fresh talent. If you’re ready to take the next step, submit your digitals to us here.
3. Study the Industry
The best models are students of their craft. Mel encourages aspiring models to “start looking at editorials, YouTube videos on how models move, watching catwalk videos, looking at Pinterest, magazines—just all sorts of things—and really look at what poses models do.”
Understanding how to move in front of the camera and studying professional models’ body language will help you become more comfortable and confident in front of the lens.
4. Build Your Portfolio
A strong portfolio is key to landing jobs. “Finding a friend or photographers, and either paying for tests or seeing if people want to test with you for free and building your book” is crucial, Mel says. Test shoots—also known as TFP (Trade for Print) shoots—allow you to gain experience and build your portfolio without the pressure of paid work. The more quality images you have, the better your chances of catching an agency’s attention.
5. Practice, Network, and Stay Persistent
Modeling takes dedication and perseverance. Continue practicing your poses, networking with photographers, and improving your skills. Rejections are part of the process, but staying confident and continuing to put yourself out there is key to success.
